Tonight, we ate our very first greens of the season: lettuce, spinach, and zen hybrid leaves tossed into a very tasty salad (other ingredients were purchased from the store).

As is often the case, I was down to my last mouthful before I remembered to take a picture, but I did remember to take pictures of the greens in the colander before they were made into a salad.

Also, we are almost to the point of putting plastic sheeting on our greenhouse. Dink says he wants to sleep in it this summer…. as long as he can get Wi-Fi 🙂 Not sure where it’s going yet, but right now it is on a patch of zoysia grass and it’s pretty darn comfortable!

Last week, everyone had spring fever. This week, everyone is back inside because for the past few days, it has been very cold and annoyingly windy. Now we will get some lovely rainy days, some cold nights, and some not-very-warm days.

It’s okay, but makes us feel like we’ve gone backwards into winter again. All of our blooming tomatillo plants, tomato plants, lettuces, and new fruit trees are waiting for warmer weather in our garage. We even put a heater in there one night because it dipped into the 20s.

I think they are more content with the weather than we are 🙂


 

Here is our very simple hydroponics system built by our dad. We are going to grow lettuce and spinach and possibly other plants with it all year round – at least that is the hope.

He bought a Blue Hawk 10-gallon container and drilled holes (with a jigsaw) to hold the cups. In the corner is another hole covered with one of those bathtub stoppers in which to pour water and fertilizer into the tupperware. He rigged up the airstones that add oxygen to the water and also keep the water flowing.

Clay pellets are used to support the plants and we filled the baskets almost halfway with them. We had four lettuce seedlings which we felt were large enough to put in, so we planted them and a little bit later planted the bottoms of some scallions we had in the fridge.

This was technically our first spring project, but we wanted to make sure that it worked and that the plants lived before we wrote about it.

One last thing, we’ve been wanting to try hydroponics for at least a year but it was a bit intimidating. That’s why we finally decided to just do the very absolute simplest method just to see what it would involve. What we saw was that it was easy and now feel confident to move on to a larger and slightly more complicated system.

If you’ve felt intimidated, just do what we did. Get some very basic supplies and just start really small. You’ll build up your confidence to try something bigger. If you’ve ever gotten dirty – really dirty – lettuce from the grocery store, let that convince you to start growing your own plants both indoors and out, and have fresh lettuce, spinach, and more all year long.


Today was a really nice day so I spent most of the time outside, pruning fruit trees with my parents and building stuff for the garden. Last night my dad and I finished another compost tumbler, which is now already half full, and today after pruning, we started work on a raised bed. This particular raised bed is 3′ x 8′ and is for our strawberries. We didn’t quite finish it, but we only have about half an hour of work left before it’s done.

So now we have two compost tumblers composting away, we have a couple of apple and peach trees pruned, and we have 1 and a half raised beds built. We still need to build quite a lot of raised beds and as much as two more compost tumblers, but now that the weather is nicer, we will be able to make fast progress.

In addition, on our last garden post, we mentioned the fact that our indoor cucumber plants were flowering. They are still flowering, and we also saw a few tiny cucumbers growing on the plants. We’ll see how big they get before they go outside for good!

Thankfully our peas are looking much better, so we took some pictures of our set up. The peas are also getting ready to bloom and there are even a couple of small pea pods on them.

We never intended to grow cukes indoors; we were just checking to see if the seeds were viable. And I don’t know why the peas were ever planted. I think someone was just too anxious to get spring started in here 🙂
