We recently acquired a FoodSaver brand food saver. It vacuum seals bags which can contain anything of your choosing. In a vacuum sealed bag, food tends to last longer, especially when frozen as well. While we had trouble actually figuring out how to use it, we have been satisfied since we did, and we can tell it’s going to be well worth the money.
For us, there should be plenty to vacuum seal. Most recently, we packaged up a bunch of ground beef that we bought in bulk. We then put the vacuum sealed pounds of beef in the freezer, so they should last quite a bit. In addition, whereas our regular Ziploc freezer bags will normally leak blood and other juices when we defrost meat, these are more sturdy and we shouldn’t have to worry about that. We’ll also probably end up storing a lot of our garden produce with this.
If you’re in the market for a vacuum sealer, the FoodSaver FM2000-FFP model is the one that we purchased, and we are, as stated before, happy with it. A friend informed me that, while the machines themselves often aren’t expensive, the FoodSaver brand bags cost a lot of money and are where the price really starts to add up. If you do decide to buy a food saver, you might want to consider taking my friend’s advice and buying bags in bulk online.
Also, it’s been less then a week since I’ve published! What a rare occasion!
