Groundhog Damage and Random Toad

This year, we had a extra resident on our property who was staying under the deck. It was a groundhog.

Although we had a very wet spring/early summer, a drought hit us towards the end of the summer and only now is it raining again. During the driest spell, our furry friend could not find anything to eat, so unlike a ground hog we had one year, it was not well-behaved.

The garden was pretty much finished, so he couldn’t do any more damage there, but the deck was still abounding in things to eat. So up he went and ate whatever he enjoyed down to little stumps.

Then my mom found a frog in the driveway and put a bucket over it until I could come out to see it. But it actually wasn’t a frog; it was a Bufo americanus! That’s an American toad. Surprisingly, when we lifted up the bucket to take a picture, it didn’t freak out.

It’s odd, though, since we almost never see toads around here. I guess he liked our gravel.
