Recently two people in my family got their wisdom teeth pulled, and they both got this sheet of paper with instructions on what and what not to do before and after the facial surgery.

Most of the things made sense, like don’t eat any seeds, don’t drive after the anesthesia, and to contact the office if you get a cold or something.

Some we didn’t understand, though. They said not to wear fingernail polish or acrylic nails prior to arrival and to not wear lotions or makeup, even body lotion.

Here’s what we learned from random people on the internet: if you wear anything on your nails which will block the color, the doctor will not be able to see if your nail beds are turning blue (not enough oxygen). You shouldn’t wear makeup or lotions because they may prevent the things which the doctor may need to adhere to your skin from sticking properly.

I wish instructions like these came with reasons. It seems like people would be more apt to obey them if they understood why.

So far, this doctor has pulled out a total of 9 teeth from our family. He will be pulling out 4 more from Dink pretty soon and a couple more from my oldest brother (he found out that he does have wisdom teeth even though our dentist told him he didn’t have any 😦 ).

Anyway, that’s a lot of teeth and it’s a little disgusting to think about it.

I agree if explanations were made, more would do things without much fuss.
