Beware the Squirrels!

Posted: June 1, 2015 in Articles

In New York City, in the Bronx, there was an attack on a person in May. It was a brutal assault, committed by a most unusual foe: the humble, yet apparently omnivorous, squirrel. It bit an MTV worker on the finger, and she had to go to the hospital. Another squirrel, or possibly the same one, attacked another MTV worker.

When we were first looking at apartments in Philadelphia, we were seeing articles about rabid beavers in the city. We were thinking, beware, everyone! Don’t trust a beaver you see waddling down the sidewalk. We thought it was a little ridiculous, but at the same time we were hoping we didn’t encounter a truly rabid beaver.

Now we’re wondering if this squirrel had rabies, if it was just insane, or what was up with that squirrel (or those squirrels). In any case, if it is rabies or some other disease, we hope it doesn’t spread! You can keep your mentally unstable squirrels to yourselves, thank you.

I have heard before that squirrels are vicious, they are after-all related to rats, often called ‘tree-rats’ over here. They are not the cute and cuddly critters children’s books would have us believe and you should not try to stroak them or handle them in any way regardless of whether or not they might have rabies!
