Banning Hoodies – Reasonable . . . Racist?

In Philadelphia, there are certain neighborhoods in which stores have signs in front of their shops saying, “Do Not Enter With Mask Or Hoodie.” In smaller letters, below that text, it says, “If So You Are Now Trespassing.”

Well, to us, this seems reasonable. If someone walks into your shop and has a hood on, and if that person happens to rob your shop, any and all security cameras won’t be able to catch the person’s face. Therefore, although you may be able to see his clothes and his hood, you won’t be able to see his face, which is what’s really important to get. Obviously, the same thing is true with a mask.

So while this seems like a reasonable request, as usual, someone came out and said it’s racist because it may “unfairly target young African-American men.”

As we all know, hoodies became a symbol of the Trayvon Martin case two years ago, but the reality is that just about every young person wears hoodies, male or female and across all races.

Regardless, if a shop owner feels that he wants people’s heads to be exposed while shopping in his establishment, we think it is quite fair and racism free. Who knows, it may actually even help bring down the number of robberies.
