Be Yourself, Think Outside the Box . . . Or Not

These days two big sayings in America are “just be yourself” and “think outside the box”. While these things are really encouraged, it seems that as soon as you stick to your beliefs even as they conflict with understood societal norms, as soon as you try to think differently than the program, you are hated by the same people who tell you it’s good to be different.

Thus the questions, “When can I just be myself?” and “What box can I think outside of?”

I notice when people try to stick to traditional values or when they avoid being politically correct. They stick out as quite different from the majority in society and they certainly are thinking outside the politically correctness box that has been built around all of us.

Basically, you can think outside the box as long as you are still inside their box. For example, we’ve written several articles that are probably considered out of the box. In one particular article, we asked what was so fundamentally wrong with racism and why everybody was making a huge deal out of it. That’s definitely thinking outside the box, but it would not be well received because it doesn’t fit into the acceptable box. Can you see the hypocrisy?

I just noticed this yesterday and it really had an impact on me. It seems really backwards, but then again, a lot of things in our society seem backwards to me.
