Volunteer Plants in Our Garden This Year

We are accidentally growing some pumpkins, watermelons, cantaloupe, and butternut squash this year. What I mean by that is that we have several volunteer plants that popped up in our compost pile or in the garden. The pumpkin plants grew because last Halloween, we were cleaning our pumpkins outside, and we threw the seeds into the garden.

The watermelons and cantaloupe are growing in our compost pile obviously because that’s where we throw all our kitchen scraps. Since they are growing, we’re going to leave them alone. The butternut squash came up in our garden – our sister was on a butternut squash kick early this spring and lots of seeds were thrown out there.

The point is, a lot of times if you want to grow something, you don’t have to go out and buy seeds (unless you’re growing hybrid plants). We were not planning on growing any of the volunteers we have, except for the butternut squash. Getting surprise plants in your garden or compost is really fun and all of the plants except the squash already have buds or flowers on them.

What are the best volunteer plants you’ve ever gotten?
