Our Bill of Rights

I have been reading about the Bill of Rights in my history course, and it is astonishing how our rights are being taken away. Several of our God-given rights are being taken away by our government. To me, these are the main rights the government is infringing on today:

  • First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances
  • Second Amendment: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
  • Fourth Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
  • Tenth Amendment: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

These are rights we are supposed to have, but these rights in particular are being slowly taken away – some not so slowly.

We see the government abuse our rights written in our 1st Amendment every time they say we need a permit to protest somewhere; that we have to go to “Free Speech Zones”. There is no such thing as a free speech zone. That has been made up.

Demanding that Christians pay for abortions, which Christians view as murder, is prohibiting the free exercise of our faith (http://www.ligonier.org/blog/should-christians-refuse-pay-taxes-when-they-are-used-finance-abortions/). With churches’ tax-exempt status (playing with fire), how long do Christians think they will be able to preach God’s whole Word?

Obviously, the right to bear arms is going, going, almost gone. The government has many sly ways to prevent people from gaining arms and defending themselves. One is to shut down all the lead plants so people cannot get ammunition (http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/16881-epa-closure-of-last-lead-smelting-plant-to-impact-ammunition-production). Now what good is a gun, if you have no bullets?

It is also easy to see that the government is ignoring the fourth amendment. Sometimes policemen, if they pull you over, they will give your car a searching – without a warrant (http://www.policymic.com/articles/53367/watch-this-21-year-old-expose-shocking-police-abuse-on-hidden-tape-in-tennessee). Or they will download everything on a person’s cellphone or laptop, again without a warrant. The people who say, “Well, if you haven’t done anything wrong, you should have nothing to hide” are completely mindless. If you haven’t done anything wrong, does that mean you want strangers to enter your private space and go through all your personal belongings? Can we go through all of their (policemen & the people ordering the policemen) personal belongings?

Anyway, what good is it to have a Bill of Rights if the American people couldn’t care less that their rights are being taken away? People who don’t care forfeit them and they don’t deserve something so awesome as the Bill of Rights.
