Heating the Outdoors is not Green

The city of Philadelphia seems to house a lot of green and organic kinds of people. That is why John and I were surprised to see heaters outside of nearby restaurants. Heating the outside must use an enormous amount of energy which does not seem to fit into the trendy culture of the area.

The outdoor heaters keep the air around the tables warm so that the diners can eat without being cold, but since the heaters are outside, they have to constantly be going strong. The outdoor heaters in the pictures above are not so bad because they are relatively small, but there is a restaurant down the street where hot air blows down on the customers eating on the sidewalk from under the awning – even in 20˚F weather. We think it’s crazy.
