Some Weird Plants in Our Yard

Posted: May 13, 2012 in Yard and Garden

Last year, we started some onion seedlings in small pots. Over the summer, we put them into our garden and looked forward to some onions. However, it turned out that the company that we ordered the seeds from had actually sent us scallions and by the time we realized that they were scallions and not onions, they were too bitter to use. The company we ordered from is called Park Seeds and they used to be great, but recently they have been very unreliable. They keep on sending us the wrong seeds and it is very annoying.

Anyway, we left the scallions in the garden. The green part died in the winter, but the bulbs apparently stayed there. This spring, they grew again and since we haven’t started on our garden yet, they’re still there. They have grown huge and right now they’re as tall as John. They will probably be very fun to cut down.

There is another really tall plant in our yard. It comes up to John’s shoulder. It isn’t just tall, though. It is kind of weird too. It feels very furry and there is a thing growing at the top that looks kind of like a ear of corn. There is a yellow flower below the “ear of corn” and the leaves are really big. I don’t know what kind of plant it is, but our mom said that it will probably be taller than John when it’s done growing.

Finding a good seed company is the trick. I try to buy organic, heirloom, etc.. types of seeds. Not the easiest to find at a decent price.
